The Empty Nest

Do you want to share?

Do you like this story?

There is a popular notion that when the last child leaves home, the parents become tearful and sad; women especially become depressed and lack a sense of purpose. Yet there is little basis to this view.

A comparison of working and nonworking mothers whose children had just left home or were in the process of doing so showed that almost all of them responded to the departure of their children with a decided sense of relief.

While most women experienced temporary feelings of anxiety, disapointment, and sadness, these feelings were quickly superseded by an equally powerful need to turn attention to their own lives.

Many women regarded this period as the exciting beginning of a new phase of their lives. A majority of men and women look forward to the empty nest stage.

After having children in the home for 25 years or so, parents welcome the prospect of a more private life and an opportunity for pursuing personal fullfillment not possible in earlier periods.
